Polygonum cuspidatum is the scientific name given to the Japanese knotweed. It is one of today’s most important food supplement and therefore on very high demand. If you did not know, food supplements provide one of the largest industries and market. It is very lucrative and therefore it is now attracting very many players.
There is no doubt that plant products have always been a good source not only of food supplements, but also medicines. Take for example the anti-malarial medicine known as artemesia, this had been used in China for more than 1,000 years yet was not fully recognized by the western science world. This is how the resveratrol from the Japanese knotweed has eluded the western medicine until recently.
There is however one fact about using the plant medicines. It is that not all plants of the same species will have equal concentration of the active ingredient. This is because some of the ingredients used by these plants to make the active molecules in the medicine are drawn from the soil. The concentration of the ingredient in the soil will therefore determine how potent the plant extract will be.
There is therefore a chance that the Japanese knotweed and other plants grown in Japan and Mexico may be having higher levels of the active ingredients such as selenium. However, the varying temperatures and the distance from the equatorial climate are factors that have not been explained.
Over the years of use of resveratrol since its isolation from Japanese knotweed, it has been noted that the extract from Japan and Mexico are usually more potent. It first started with noticing the relatively longer lifespan of people in these two countries. Then came the low incidences and low prevalence rates cardiovascular diseases among populations in this countries. If you are not sure about this, then make a visit to either of these countries and see for yourself the number of the elderly people who are not stooping in obedience to gravity. Instead they are full of energy and vitality. They are actually thought to be the world’s most sexually active older generation.
Similar claims have been made on red wine and the eating of grape skins. They are known to provide this chemicals and therefore able to keep one looking young for a long period. The next time you are considering where to retire and live in, you may as well consider Japan or Mexico.
