People love to eat appetizers in every country of the world. In some places, appetizers are recognized as a meal on their own. We are lucky enough to be able to pick and choose from appetizer recipes all over the world and enjoy eating them. You can even use techniques from two different cuisines and do a fusion appetizer. In China, appetizers are called dim sum. This category of recipes covers a wide range of dishes. In some authentic Chinese restaurants, you can order dim sum and choose the dishes you want off of a rolling cart. Dim sum can also be served at parties. You can order it from a catering company, some Chinese restaurants or you can learn to make it yourself. Japanese sushi can also be used as appetizers. There are many different types of sushi and each one can be eaten in one or two bites. Indian satay and other exotic dishes from India can be used as appetizers. They may include seafood, chicken or spicy vegetables.


Italian appetizers fall under the heading of antipasto. This means “before the meal.” Antipasto or antipasti usually consists of cheeses, dried meats, salads or sun dried tomatoes. You can also find bread dipped in olive oil or olives on the table before an Italian meal.


Spain has elevated appetizers to a true art form known as tapas. Tapas bars are everywhere in Spain. These bars offer liquid refreshment and buffets of appetizers to temper the affects of the alcohol. Spanish appetizers may be made of olives, cured meats, or cheeses, among other things. It is said that King Alfonso X decreed that wine could only be served with food in order to inhibit drunkenness.


Appetizers have many names in different countries. The UK calls them starters. France calls them canaps, amuse-bouche, or hors d’oeuvres. In Sweden, appetizers make up the smorgasbord. You may find appetizers made of salmon, herring or eel as well as butter, cheese and bread. The tradition in Sweden is to eat cold foods, and then alternate with hot foods until the meal is done.


In the Middle East and Greece, they call appetizers “meze.” You may find yourself enjoying deep fried foods with dips that are yogurt based. Seafood is a very popular ingredient for appetizers in South and Central America. Shrimp is one of the most frequently used ingredients. Tortillas are also very popular to dip. In the Caribbean, coconut chips are very popular.


When you look at all the recipes from around the world, you can find lots of easy party appetizers to try. There is no reason to spend too much time in the kitchen when you are entertaining. Appetizers can be used as the sole source of party food or they can come before a meal.
